The Lagos State Police Command has announced that it will on Friday arraign Shamsideen Adio, a 55-year-old National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leader popularly called Shameleon, over the alleged killing of a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.
Adio was arrested in connection with a violent altercation that occurred on September 17, 2025, along Tapa Street. Eyewitnesses said the clash started after the rider allegedly obstructed Adio’s vehicle. The argument quickly escalated, and Adio, aided by friends and associates, allegedly beat the victim mercilessly.
Video footage of the incident showed Adio repeatedly punching the rider while bystanders looked on without stepping in. Witnesses further recounted that the rider was struck with fists and a helmet until he collapsed. He was rushed to a hospital but later died from the injuries sustained.
Police spokesperson Bababseyi Oluseyi confirmed that Adio is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, pending his arraignment.
The incident has also drawn the attention of the Lagos State House of Assembly, which demanded justice. The Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, condemned the assault, calling it “barbaric, inhuman, and disgraceful,” and insisted that Adio must face full prosecution.
Adedeji also urged the Lagos NURTW leadership, headed by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to suspend Adio and disassociate the union from such lawless conduct. According to him, the NURTW should uphold professionalism and cannot accommodate members who disregard human dignity or engage in reckless violence.
