The Imo State Police Command says it has commenced a rescue mission for former lawmaker, Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, who is being held hostage by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
A disturbing video, which went viral on Saturday night, showed Ogbu pleading with the state government and security agencies to withdraw security operatives from a location known as White House in Okigwe Local Government Area, warning that his captors would kill him within four days if the demand was not met.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the abduction on Sunday, noting that Ogbu was kidnapped in Onuimo Local Government Area on September 7, 2025. He said Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, had deployed tactical units working with other security agencies to track down the abductors and ensure Ogbu’s safe release.
“The Imo State Police Command is aware of a viral video showing Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, former State Legislator who represented the Okigwe State Constituency, being held hostage by suspected IPOB/ESN terrorists.
CP Aboki Danjuma has since ordered the immediate deployment of tactical units in synergy with other security agencies. A detailed investigation has been launched to apprehend the hoodlums and ensure the safe rescue of the lawmaker,” Okoye said.
The command appealed for calm, urging residents with credible information to contact the police via 0803 477 3600 or report at the nearest police station. Okoye assured that the authorities would not relent until Ogbu is rescued and reunited with his family.
In the viral video, Ogbu—who previously served as a local government chairman and legislator—was visibly distressed as he begged the government to heed the insurgents’ demands. A masked gunman identified as a member of the Biafra Liberation Army accused security operatives of poisoning their leader, Gentle, and threatened more kidnappings and killings if their demands were ignored.
Another member of the group alleged that Ogbu was instrumental in bringing Ebubeagu operatives to the area and vowed to “unleash terror” if security forces were not withdrawn.
The incident has heightened fears in Imo State, already grappling with rising insecurity linked to IPOB and ESN activities, and has put renewed pressure on security agencies to swiftly secure Ogbu’s release.
